Water, silicone, hybrid: which lube for what

Health, Lube, Play 29 Jun 2026

Almost everyone buys their first bottle of lube like toothpaste: whatever's on the shelf. And sticks with it until the lube is gone after ten minutes, the skin gets sticky or a favourite toy suddenly has a dull surface. The choice is simpler than the shelf suggests. There are essentially four bases, each with a clear strength and a clear limit. Know them, and you choose by situation rather than packaging.

For anal sex, this isn't a question of style. The anal region produces practically no lubrication of its own, so lube is basic equipment here. In our community, the bottle sits on the nightstand as naturally as the phone charger. All the more reason to know what's in it.

Water-based: easy, but quickly thirsty

Water-based lube is the all-rounder. It's compatible with all common condoms, whether latex, polyurethane or polyisoprene, and with every toy material, silicone included. It washes off with water and usually leaves no stains.

The trade-off is staying power. Water evaporates and absorbs into the skin, the gel turns tacky and needs topping up. A few drops of water often revive it. When buying, check the ingredients list: formulas high in glycerin quickly feel sticky and can irritate sensitive skin. A short list is usually a good sign.

Silicone: long-lasting, with one exception

Silicone lube doesn't absorb or evaporate. It stays where it belongs, even over longer periods and even in the shower. For anal sex, that's the decisive advantage: less topping up, fewer interruptions. Silicone is compatible with latex, polyurethane and polyisoprene condoms.

The exception is silicone toys. Silicone on silicone can damage the surface, making the material sticky or rough. So use water-based for those. With glass, stainless steel and hard plastic, silicone lube is no problem. It washes off with soap and warm water. On tiles it gets slippery, and it can leave marks on fabric.

Hybrid: creamy, with small print

Hybrids combine water and silicone, usually in a milky, creamy texture. Longer-lasting than pure water-based, easier to wash off than pure silicone. Many like the feel on the skin because it's closer to a light lotion than a gel.

The silicone content means the same caution applies with silicone toys. And because formulas vary widely, the label decides when it comes to condoms. If it doesn't explicitly state condom compatibility, choose something else.

Oil: great for massage, not with latex

Coconut oil, massage oil, Vaseline: greasy products glide for a long time and feel soft, which is why some reach for them when in doubt. With latex condoms, that's a no. Oil weakens the material and the condom can tear. The same goes for polyisoprene condoms. For massage, oil is wonderful. As soon as a condom is involved, the bottle stays shut.

Consistency and feel beat any label

Bottles promise a lot: extra long-lasting, ultra sensitive, warming, cooling. Two things matter that no label can predict. Consistency: thin lube spreads quickly, thicker gels stay in place better, often more comfortable for anal sex. And skin feel: silky and light or rich and wet. You only find out by trying.

Go easy on additives. Warming or cooling effects can sting on sensitive skin. Numbing lubes are not a good idea for anal sex, because pain is a signal you should feel. If it burns or itches after switching, stop using the lube. If it doesn't settle, ask a pharmacist or your doctor.

In short:

  • Water-based: works with all condoms and toys, dries faster.
  • Silicone: long glide, compatible with latex condoms, not with silicone toys.
  • Hybrid: creamy, condom compatibility as per label, caution with silicone toys.
  • Oil: never with latex or polyisoprene condoms.
